In the eons following the departure of humankind, amidst the tranquil expanse of a bog nestled along the windswept shores of the Pacific Northwest, unfolds the quiet saga of the Drosera Obscura — a tale woven with threads of adaptation and symbiosis.
Child of the
Round-leaved Sundew
From the lineage of Drosera rotundifolia — the humble round-leaved sundew of northern peatlands — emerges this curious successor. A testament to the resilience of life in the face of ecological upheaval.
Where its ancestor clung to life in nutrient-poor moss, Obscura has inherited that same quiet tenacity, amplified by millennia of pressure into something altogether stranger and more wondrous.
It does not merely survive. It remembers — threading the relics of a bygone era into the very fabric of its body.

Mucilage &
The Plastic Weave
A carnivorous marvel, Obscura thrives in the nutrient-poor peat by ensnaring and digesting unsuspecting insects. Its glandular tentacles secrete a sweet, luminous mucilage — an attractive scent carried on the bog wind.
But Obscura has repurposed this ancient secretion beyond mere predation. The same sticky substance now fuses microplastics scattered in the bog floor, incorporating shards of polyethylene, nylon filaments, and translucent acrylic into a hardened corallite casing.
A home built from the residue of a species that could not stay. Refuse become refuge.
Rust, Gears &
Hollow Voice
Forgotten contraptions from a bygone era find new life beneath Obscura's touch. Rusted machinery from cranberry harvests — mechanical rakes, corroded bobbins, belt-driven drums — have been woven into the casing by decades of patient growth.
A hollowed cranberry separator shell forms an ethereal resonance chamber, amplifying the plant's chemical attractant calls. The crackling of oxidized gears becomes a language — a Morse of friend and foe, threat and invitation, broadcast across the boggy silence.
Phototropic movements blend with a newfound knack for harnessing the winds. With each coastal gust, the mechanism stirs, and Obscura propels itself — slowly, over seasons — toward richer ground.
Into the
Hibernaculum
With the onset of autumn — as the Pacific light slants low and cold rains sweep in from the sea — Obscura retreats inward. Its battle-tested shell falls to the earth, a spent exoskeleton releasing its hold.
Beneath the peat, the hibernaculum waits: a dense winter bud, tightly coiled against frost and flood, carrying within it the full blueprint of the organism.
Come the stirrings of spring — the first warming of the bog water, the return of certain midges — the bud yields. A new plant blossoms, entwining into the home of its ancestor. The old casing is reabsorbed, the microplastics reconfigured, the machine given new purpose.
The cycle begins again.

An Immersive XR Environment
Drosera Obscura is a deeply immersive XR project that dissolves the boundaries between the organic and the digital through a multisensory environment shaped by sight, sound, scent, and touch. Set within a speculative post-human bogscape, the experience invites participants to explore a living world of animatronic flora, reactive soundscapes, and tactile interfaces that blur the line between virtual and physical space.
Inspired by evolved carnivorous plants and their symbiotic relationships with sound and synthetic biology, the project transforms passive observation into active participation. Participants influence the environment in real time: disturbing digital foliage releases subtle fragrances, alters lighting patterns, and reshapes spatialized sound.
These interactions expand VR outward, turning what is often an isolated medium into a performative, theatrical ecosystem that responds to human presence with both eerie intimacy and strange beauty.
At its core, Drosera Obscura examines ecological interdependence, embodiment, and the evolving relationship between technology and living systems — offering an experience that feels at once alien, responsive, and alive.
